Business Capability Mapping
Definition
Business Capability Mapping is the process of identifying, organizing, and visualizing the capabilities required for an organization to execute its strategy successfully. Unlike organizational charts, which describe reporting relationships, capability maps describe what the organization must be able to do, regardless of who performs the work.
Capabilities are typically organized hierarchically, beginning with broad business functions and progressively breaking them into more specialized capabilities. This structure enables organizations to evaluate strengths, identify gaps, prioritize investment, and align technology, people, and processes with strategic objectives.
Capability Mapping is frequently used during digital transformation, mergers and acquisitions, operating model redesign, and strategic planning because it provides a stable view of organizational capability independent of current organizational structure.
Why It Matters
Organizations often redesign departments without understanding which capabilities actually create value. Capability Mapping improves strategic alignment, investment prioritization, transformation planning, and long-term organizational development by focusing attention on capabilities rather than organizational silos.
