Business Model Canvas

Definition

The Business Model Canvas is a strategic management framework developed by Alexander Osterwalder that provides a structured visual representation of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value. The framework divides a business into nine interconnected building blocks covering customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structure.


Rather than functioning as a business plan, the Business Model Canvas encourages organizations to examine how different components of the business interact and whether they remain aligned with strategic objectives. Because the framework is visual and collaborative, it is widely used during strategy development, innovation projects, startup planning, and business transformation initiatives.


Although simple in appearance, the Canvas supports sophisticated strategic discussion by making assumptions visible and highlighting dependencies between different aspects of the organization.

Why It Matters

Organizations often improve isolated parts of the business without considering how those changes influence the broader operating model. The Business Model Canvas encourages systems thinking by helping leaders evaluate the organization as an integrated whole. It also improves communication between stakeholders by providing a common framework for discussing strategic alternatives and organizational design.
