Decision Criteria are the explicit standards used to evaluate and compare alternative courses of action during the decision-making process. They establish how alternatives will be assessed, ensuring that choices are based on consistent and transparent reasoning rather than personal preference or subjective opinion.
Decision Criteria vary depending on the business context. Financial return, implementation cost, strategic alignment, customer impact, operational feasibility, regulatory compliance, technological complexity, risk exposure, scalability, and expected long-term value are among the most common evaluation factors. Effective criteria are defined before alternatives are assessed to reduce bias and improve objectivity.
Organizations frequently assign relative importance or weighting to different criteria because not all considerations contribute equally to the final decision.
