Definition
Decision Quality is the standard by which the strength of a decision-making process is evaluated independently of the outcome it eventually produces. A high-quality decision is characterized by clearly defined objectives, relevant evidence, explicit assumptions, balanced evaluation of alternatives, appropriate stakeholder involvement, and disciplined reasoning appropriate to the significance of the decision.
Decision Quality should not be confused with business success. A well-reasoned decision may produce disappointing results because external circumstances change unexpectedly, while a poorly reasoned decision may occasionally succeed through favorable market conditions or chance. For this reason, organizations seeking continuous improvement evaluate the quality of the decision process separately from its eventual outcome.
Strong Decision Quality also requires proportionality. Routine operational decisions should not require the same analytical effort as major strategic investments, acquisitions, or market expansion initiatives.
