Decision Rights
Definition
Decision Rights define who has the authority, responsibility, and accountability to make specific decisions within an organization. They establish clear ownership over strategic, operational, financial, and organizational choices, reducing ambiguity regarding who recommends, approves, executes, or reviews a decision.
Decision Rights are distinct from job titles or organizational hierarchy. A senior executive may retain authority over strategic investments while delegating operational decisions to business unit leaders. Likewise, subject matter experts may provide recommendations without possessing final decision authority. Effective organizations explicitly define these responsibilities so that decision-making remains both efficient and accountable.
Clearly established Decision Rights also distinguish between consultation and approval. While many stakeholders may contribute information or expertise, not every participant is responsible for making the final decision.
Why It Matters
Poorly defined Decision Rights often result in duplicated work, delayed execution, conflicting priorities, and uncertainty regarding accountability.
