Forecast Accuracy is the degree to which projected outcomes correspond to actual results over a defined period. It measures the reliability of forecasting processes by comparing predicted values with observed performance and evaluating the magnitude and direction of forecasting error.
Forecast Accuracy is relevant across numerous business functions, including sales forecasting, demand planning, financial forecasting, workforce planning, inventory management, market growth estimation, and strategic planning. Organizations commonly evaluate accuracy using statistical measures such as Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), forecast bias, and other analytical techniques.
High Forecast Accuracy does not necessarily indicate a superior forecasting process if achieved during unusually stable conditions. Likewise, lower accuracy may occur despite sound methodology when external environments become exceptionally volatile. For this reason, forecast performance should always be interpreted alongside changing market conditions and underlying assumptions.
