Information

Definition

Information is data that has been organized, interpreted, and placed within a meaningful context so that it contributes to understanding. While data consists of individual observations or measurements, information explains what those observations represent and how they relate to a specific business question.

Organizations transform data into information by classifying, validating, summarizing, comparing, and interpreting observations collected from customers, operations, financial systems, markets, competitors, or research activities. Information therefore represents an intermediate stage between raw data and actionable knowledge.

Possessing information does not necessarily imply understanding. Information describes events, conditions, or relationships, but additional analysis is often required before strategic implications become clear.

Why It Matters

Modern organizations rarely suffer from a lack of information. Instead, they face the challenge of identifying which information is relevant, reliable, and meaningful. Effective decision-making depends not on collecting more information but on selecting the information that most effectively reduces uncertainty and supports sound judgment.
