Definition

Metrics are quantitative measurements used to monitor, evaluate, and communicate the performance of business activities, processes, products, or strategic initiatives. Metrics translate organizational activity into measurable information, enabling decision-makers to assess progress, identify trends, compare performance, and support evidence-based management.


Not every metric is strategically important. Organizations routinely collect hundreds of measurements relating to operations, finance, customers, marketing, technology, and human resources. The challenge lies not in collecting more metrics but in selecting those that genuinely support decision-making and reflect organizational priorities.


Metrics differ from Key Performance Indicators. While every KPI is a metric, not every metric qualifies as a KPI. KPIs measure progress toward strategic objectives, whereas many metrics simply describe operational activity without directly indicating organizational success.

Why It Matters

Appropriate metrics improve organizational transparency, strengthen accountability, support continuous improvement, and provide objective evidence for evaluating strategic initiatives. Poorly selected metrics, however, may encourage undesirable behavior or distract attention from outcomes that matter most.
