Net Present Value (NPV)

Net Present Value, commonly abbreviated as NPV, is a financial valuation method used to determine the current value of future cash flows generated by an investment after accounting for the time value of money. The method recognizes that money available today is generally more valuable than the same amount received in the future because today's capital can be invested, earn returns, or reduce financial risk.
NPV is calculated by discounting all expected future cash inflows and outflows to their present value using an appropriate discount rate, then subtracting the initial investment. A positive NPV indicates that the investment is expected to create value beyond the required rate of return, while a negative NPV suggests that expected returns may not justify the investment under the assumptions used.
Although NPV provides a rigorous financial perspective, it depends heavily on assumptions regarding future cash flows, discount rates, market conditions, operational performance, and investment timing. Changes in these assumptions can significantly influence the final result.
