Qualitative Research
Definition
Qualitative Research is a research methodology designed to explore how people think, behave, perceive, and make decisions by examining experiences, motivations, opinions, and contextual factors that cannot easily be reduced to numerical measurement. Rather than estimating how many people behave in a particular way, qualitative research seeks to understand why they behave as they do.
Common qualitative methods include in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnographic research, participant observation, customer shadowing, diary studies, workshops, and open-ended discussions. These approaches encourage participants to describe experiences in their own words, allowing researchers to identify themes, emotions, decision processes, unmet needs, and emerging patterns.
Qualitative Research emphasizes depth rather than statistical representation. Although findings may not always be generalizable to entire populations, they frequently reveal insights that structured quantitative methods cannot capture.
Why It Matters
