Definition

A Research Question is the clearly defined question that a research project is designed to answer. It establishes the purpose, scope, and direction of the investigation by identifying the specific issue that requires evidence before an informed decision can be made. Every element of a research project, including methodology, sampling, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, should be aligned with the Research Question.


Strong Research Questions are focused, specific, relevant, and answerable through systematic investigation. Rather than asking broad or ambiguous questions such as "How can we improve our business?", effective questions narrow the investigation to issues that can be meaningfully explored. For example, "Which customer segments are most likely to adopt our new product during the first twelve months after launch?" provides a much clearer foundation for research.


Well-formulated Research Questions often evolve during exploratory research as organizations gain a better understanding of the underlying business problem.

Why It Matters

Poorly defined Research Questions frequently lead to unfocused studies, unnecessary data collection, and findings that provide limited value for decision-making. Clearly defining the research question improves efficiency, strengthens methodology, aligns stakeholders, and increases the likelihood that research will generate actionable insights.
