Risk Assessment

Definition

Risk Assessment is the structured process of identifying potential risks, evaluating their probability and potential impact, and determining appropriate strategies for managing or mitigating them. The objective is not to eliminate uncertainty but to understand how uncertainty may influence strategic objectives and organizational performance.

Risk Assessment considers a broad range of internal and external factors, including financial exposure, operational disruption, cybersecurity threats, supply chain dependencies, regulatory compliance, technological change, customer behavior, market volatility, environmental events, and competitive developments. Effective assessments also recognize that risks rarely occur independently. Multiple risks may interact, amplify one another, or create cascading effects across the organization.

The process typically involves identifying risks, estimating likelihood, assessing impact, prioritizing according to significance, developing mitigation strategies, assigning ownership, and monitoring changes over time.

Why It Matters

Organizations that assess risks systematically are better prepared to anticipate problems before they become crises. Risk Assessment strengthens investment decisions, strategic planning, operational resilience, governance, and organizational preparedness while reducing the likelihood of costly surprises.
