Risk Mitigation

Definition

Risk Mitigation is the process of reducing either the probability that a risk will occur or the severity of its consequences if it does occur. Rather than attempting to eliminate all uncertainty, organizations implement mitigation strategies that make identified risks more manageable while preserving strategic flexibility.

Mitigation actions may include process improvements, technology investments, diversification, insurance, supplier redundancy, cybersecurity controls, regulatory compliance programs, contingency planning, employee training, contractual safeguards, or financial hedging. The most appropriate mitigation strategy depends on the nature of the risk, its expected impact, implementation cost, and organizational priorities.

Not every risk should be mitigated. In some cases, organizations deliberately accept or transfer certain risks when mitigation costs exceed expected benefits.

Why It Matters

Identifying risks alone provides limited value unless organizations also develop practical responses. Risk Mitigation enables businesses to protect operations, reduce financial exposure, strengthen resilience, improve stakeholder confidence, and continue pursuing strategic objectives despite uncertain conditions.
