Scenario Analysis
Definition
Scenario Analysis is the structured evaluation of multiple plausible future situations in order to understand how different external conditions could influence organizational performance. Rather than attempting to predict a single outcome, Scenario Analysis examines alternative possibilities and evaluates their potential implications for strategy, operations, investment, and risk.
Scenarios may differ according to economic growth, customer demand, technological change, competitive behavior, regulation, geopolitical events, or other external variables. Each scenario represents a coherent description of how conditions might evolve and how the organization would perform under those circumstances.
Scenario Analysis supports decision-making by preparing organizations for uncertainty rather than assuming that current conditions will continue indefinitely.
Why It Matters
Organizations that evaluate only one expected future often become vulnerable when conditions change unexpectedly. Scenario Analysis improves strategic resilience by encouraging leaders to consider multiple possible futures before committing significant resources.
