Strategic Scenario

Definition

A Strategic Scenario is a structured description of a plausible future business environment developed to support long-term strategic thinking. Unlike forecasts, which estimate the most likely future, Strategic Scenarios describe alternative environments that could reasonably emerge as a result of changing economic conditions, technological innovation, customer behavior, geopolitical developments, regulation, or competitive dynamics.

Each Strategic Scenario combines multiple assumptions into a coherent narrative explaining how the external environment may evolve and how those changes could influence organizational performance. The purpose is not to predict which scenario will occur but to help leaders understand how different futures may affect current strategic choices.

Effective Strategic Scenarios are internally consistent, evidence-informed, and sufficiently different from one another to challenge existing assumptions. They encourage organizations to evaluate whether current strategies remain effective across multiple possible futures rather than under a single expected outcome.

Why It Matters

Organizations that evaluate only one expected future often become vulnerable when conditions change unexpectedly. Strategic Scenarios improve preparedness, strengthen strategic flexibility, support investment decisions, and reduce the likelihood that long-term plans become dependent upon a single set of assumptions.
